Jatiya Party has drawn public attention through raising a question who is the chairman of the opposition party.
A statement signed by Jatiya Party chief patron Raushon Ershad said on Tuesday noon that she declared herself as the party’s chairman.
Sources in Jatiya Party said the drama took place under the pressure from the party’s senior leaders.
The drama was staged when Jatiya Party Chairman GM Quader was staying in India to hold meetings with leaders of Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP).
Party leaders said the dramatic move came following a longstanding dispute between Raushon Ershad and GM Quader over supremacy in the party.
"I Begum Raushan Ershad, MP, the founding co-chairman of Jatiya Party, hereby declare that I took the charge of the party chairman on the advice and decision of the senior leaders of the party in the interest of maintaining its dynamism," the statement says.
Jatiya Party’s former presidium member Kazi Mamunur Rashid, also personal secretary of Raushon, told the Daily Sun that after holding a meeting of the party leaders on Tuesday, she took charge of the party chairman. “New secretary general of the party will be declared soon. We have plan for holding Jatiya Party’s national council session in September to form full-fledged committee of the party,” he added.
“Anyone can’t declare himself as chairman of the party or remove any other at will. There is a process as per the party charter. Jatiya Party leaders and activists are united under the leadership of GM Quader,” he said.
Mujibul Haque Chunnu further said he thinks that Raushon Ershad is misguided by some expelled leaders of the party who have spread the news.
Talking to the Daily Sun, some senior leaders of the party, including Mujibul Haque Chunnu, co-chairmen Kazi Feroj Rashid, Syed Abu Hossain Babla and presidium member Shafiqul Islam Sentu, gave video message against the claim of Raushon as the party chairman.
Asked whether they accept Raushon Ershad as the party’s chairman, Jatiya Party co-chairman Kazi Feroj Rashid said, “On our behalf, party spokesperson and secretary general Mujibul Haque Chunnu clarified our position.”
Another co-chairman ABM Ruhul Amin Howlader said, “I don’t’ want any such step that the party will be affected. I want unity of the party.”
Amid pressure from the party’s leaders, Raushon Ershad dramatically retreated her position and issued a separate letter in the evening that the letter was written mistakenly as declaration of the party chairman instead of chairman of the party’s council preparation committee.
Earlier, a four-member delegation led by Raushon Ershad on Saturday met Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina at Ganabhaban and reiterated her support for the ruling Awami League in the next national election.
