The former champions Sheikh Russel Krira Chakra returned to a winning streak in the Bangladesh Premier League 2022-23 when they bagged a full 3-point after beating the lowly Azampur Football Club Uttara by 1-0 goal in their home match at the Bashundhara Sports Complex in the capital on Saturday.

Sheikh Russel, who earned only one point from their previous three matches, were expecting to bounce back with a victory over Azampur FC before the day’s match. After an indifferent first half between the two teams, the match gained momentum when Sheikh Russel were awarded a penalty.

Azampur defender Rayhan Ahmed touched the ball when trying to save a header from Sheikh Russel Uzbek defender Timur Talipov from goalmouth melee. Azampur players tried to assault referee Jashim Akter physically and put pressure on him to change the penalty decision that resulted in their defender Rayhan getting a straight marching order.

 Sheikh Russel Ivorian midfielder Kpehi Jean Charles Didier Brossou converted the spot correctly and sealed the fate of the match in the 55th minute (1-0).

In the day’s other two matches, Sheikh Jamal Dhanmondi Club conceded a 1-2 goal defeat to Dhaka Abahani at the Sheikh Fazlul Haque Mani Stadium in Gopalganj and Bangladesh Police Football Club beat Rahamatganj Muslim Friends Society by 2-0 goals at the Rafiq Uddin Bhuiyan Stadium in Mymensingh.

In Gopalganj, Nigerian forward Peter Nworah and Costa Rican forward Daniel Colindres Solera scored one each in the 10th and 34th minutes to put Dhaka Abahani's 2-0 lead while Saint Vincentian forward Cornelius Stewart scored from the spot to reduce the gap for Sheikh Jamal.

In Mymensingh, Kyrgyzs defender Almazbek Malikov and Colombian midfielder Mateo Palacios Pretel netted one each for Police FC in the 22nd and 72nd minutes.

After the matches of round 8, Dhaka Abahani remained second with 18 points while Sheikh Jamal and Police FC are sharing the third spot with 12 points, Sheikh Russel are in fourth with 10 points, Rahamatganj are in ninth with five points and Azampur at the bottom 11th with one point.
