The University Grants Commission (UGC) has asked four private universities to stop admitting new students as their temporary certificates have expired and they have failed to transfer all their activities to permanent campus and build the campus within the stipulated time.
The universities are Stamford University Bangladesh, Asa University, Prime Asia University and Victoria University.
The notice also said two universities – State University of Bangladesh and Manarat International University – have been asked to stop enrolling new students from their temporary campuses.
The programmes conducted at the permanent campuses of these two universities, however, will continue as usual.
According to the notice, six private universities have got three months and another six have got six more months to shift their all activities to their permanent campuses.
Dhaka International University, Royal University, Southeast University, City University, The Millennium University and Bangladesh University have been given time till March 31, 2023 to transfer their entire activities, including educational programmes, to the permanent campus, considering the visible progress regarding the transfer to permanent campus and construction of the campus, the notice mentions.
In case of failure to transfer all programmes, including educational programmes to the permanent campus within the mentioned time frame, the admission of new students in all programmes will be completely stopped from April 1, 2023.
After the given time frame, all temporary campuses or buildings other than the permanent campus of these universities will be considered illegal, the notice mentions.
According to the public notification, the UGC issued instructions on April 11, 2022 to transfer all programmes to the permanent campus by December 31, 2022.
The UGC at then declared the temporary campuses of 22 private universities illegal and said they would not be allowed to admit new students unless they shift to permanent campuses by December 31.
UGC Member Professor Dr Biswajit Chanda said they will review the extensions on March 31 and June 30.
As per the Private University Act, the universities must shift to a permanent campus within 12 years since getting approval.
