The Food Control Office recovered two thousand tonnes of paddy stocked illegally at an under-construction rice mill of Meghna Group in Manikchak area of Bogura Sadar Upazila on Friday.

The paddy was recovered around 10:00am on Friday from Tanvir Food Ltd, a sister concern of Meghna Group of Industries, said Monirul Haque Upazila Controller of Food at Bogura Sadar Upazila.

A case will be filed against them for illegal stockpiling of paddy, he said.

Sadar Upazila Controller of Food Monirul Islam said, “ They did not find any license from this auto rice mill. Since the rice mill was not started, they did not get the license to run the mill. Again the importer needs a license to import rice, which he could not show either. So we will call these paddies illegal.”

According to Upazila Food Control Office sources, “Work of setting up three rice mills of Meghna Group in Manikchak area is going on. The mills are not yet operational. On receiving information, a drive was conducted in the mill's area.”

At this time, about 650 tonnes of rice was found in 34 trucks and another 1,400 tonnes of rice was found in the mill compound. The Food Control Office is stating that this rice is illegal as they have no valid document to stockpile it.
