RANGPUR: Vice-chancellor of Begum Rokeya University, Rangpur (BRUR) Professor Dr. Md. Hasibur Rashid has said Begum Rokeya awakened women and brought them to the path of light, reports BSS.
"Breaking shackles of the then conservative society, Begum Rokeya has spread the light of female education. Her conscience will remain as a guide in the advancement of our womenfolk," he said.
Earlier, the Vice-chancellor led a colorful procession that paraded the main roads of the campus and ended at Russell Square.
Professor Dr. Rashid with other guests unveiled the cover of the first edition of the memorial publication 'Rokeya Path' on the occasion.
Treasurer of BRUR Professor Dr. Mojib Uddin Ahamed, Dean of the Faculty of Arts Professor Dr. Abu Saleh Mohammad Wadudur Rahman, Dean of the Faculty of Social Sciences Md Shariful Islam, Teachers' Association General Secretary Syed Anwarul Azim, Officers Association General Secretary Mohammad Ali, BRUR unit Chhatra League President Pomel Barua and its General Secretary Mahfuzur Rahman Shamim addressed.
The Vice-chancellor said the memorial book published for the first time on Begum Rokeya's philosophy will play an important role in knowledge practice and research in the future.
"This compilation will continue on Rokeya Day every year," Dr. Rashid said, adding that a permanent mural of Begum Rokeya will be erected in the campus when the current global crises are over.
Later, they jointly inaugurated observance of the day by placing wreaths at the temporary portrait of Begum Rokeya on the campus.
University Registrar Engineer Mohammad Alamgir Chowdhury, Proctor Md. Golam Rabbani and Director of the Office of the Student Affairs Md. Nuruzzaman Khan, Deans, Heads of different departments, hall provosts, directors, teachers, officials, employees and students of various departments were present.
Later, Deans of different faculties, heads of different departments, officials of residential halls, officials and employees of the university placed wreaths at the portrait of Begum Rokeya.
Besides, rich tributes were paid to Begum Rokeya by various social and cultural organizations of the university including teachers' association, officers' association, employees' union and journalists' association.
