Family seeks Khaleda’s unconditional release

The family of BNP Chairperson Khaleda Zia has sought her unconditional release and permission for taking her abroad to get better treatment.

Khaleda Zia’s younger brother Shamim Iskander sent a letter to the Home Minister on Sunday in this regard, the party sources said.

Her Personal Secretary ABM Abdus Sattar and the party chairperson’s advisory council member Bijon Kanti Das took the letter to the Ministry of Home Affairs on Sunday, BNP Media Cell Member Shayrul Kabir Khan told the Daily Sun.

“In the letter, Shamim Iskander has sought unconditional release of Khaleda Zia and permission to go abroad for her advanced medical treatment,” he added.

Home Ministry sources said the letter will be sent to Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina for her opinion. Then decision will be taken in this regard.

Talking to reporters, Law Minister Anisul Huq on Saturday said Khaleda Zia’s release period will be extended by an executive order if her (Khaleda Zia) family files petition to this end.

Lastly, on March 23 this year, Khaleda Zia’s sentence was suspended and the release period was extended by another six months under the previous two conditions. After that, a notification was issued by the Security Services Division of the Ministry of Home Affairs, extending the release period.

The government released Khaleda Zia on March 25, 2020 temporarily through an executive order. Since then, her release was extended for several times after application submitted by her family.

Earlier, Khaleda Zia's family submitted several applications to the government, seeking permission to send her to an advanced centre abroad for the treatment of her multiple health complications, but the government has rejected it every time as she was convicted of corruption by the court in two cases.
