Selim Al Deen’s birth anniversary observed at JU

The 73rd birth anniversary of eminent playwright Selim Al Deen was observed at Jahangirnagar University (JU) on Thursday.

Marking the day, Drama and Dramatics Department of the university brought out a procession in the morning.  Started from old Arts faculty building, the procession ended at the grave of Selim Al Deen. 

JU Vice Chancellor Prof Dr Nurul Alam inaugurated the rally as the chief guest. Noted film director artiste Nasiruddin Yousuff, JU Drama and Dramatics Department Prof Israfil Ahmed, JU Teacher-Student Centre (TSC) Director Prof Dr Alamgir Kabir, teachers of Drama and Dramatics Department, renowned playwrights of the country, admirers of Selim Al Deen, among others attended the procession.

Bangladesh Gram Theatre, Dhaka Theatre, Selim Al Deen Foundation, Jahangirnagar Theatre, Swapnadal, Taluknagar Theatre, Annita Selim Al Deen Patshala and JU Teacher and Student Centre (TSC) placed floral wreaths at the grave of Selim Al Deen in the morning.

Besides, JU Drama and Dramatics department organised a five-day theatre performances exhibition to mark the day.

Selim Al Deen, fondly referred to as Natyacharya, was born on 18 August 1949 in Feni. He joined Jahangirnagar University at Bangla Department in 1974. Later, he became the founder chairperson of the drama and dramatics department of the university.

He died of cardiac arrest on 14 January in 2008.
