Police detectives arrested seven members of a gang involved in stealing and hijacking auto-rickshaws in the capital’s Uttara and Ashulia areas on Tuesday.
The striking team also seized five stolen auto-rickshaws from their possession.
A team from the Dhaka Metropolitan Police's (DMP) Detective Branch (DB) Cyber and Special Crime Department arrested them.
Ashrafullah, Additional Deputy Commissioner (ADC) of DB Cyber and Special Crime Department's web-based crime investigation team, said that the gangsters targeted simple auto-rickshaw drivers. The criminals hire auto-rickshaws. When the vehicles reach the criminals’ desired destination, they ask the driver to stop and request that he bring a file or something from a house or the gatekeeper of the house. The criminals flee the scene with the vehicles as soon as the driver exits, following their requests.
After that, they take these auto rickshaws to their designated garage, change the colour and other parts, and sell them for Tk 60 to 70 thousand.
To prevent this kind of crime, the police officer advised drivers not to leave the auto-rickshaw and go elsewhere, not to take the auto-rickshaw to any solitary areas, especially at night, in the hope of higher fares, and not to eat anything offered by the passengers.
A case was filed at Uttara West Police Station. The arrested have been sent to the court with a remand petition, police said.
