24 ‘robbers’ held in city

Police arrested 14 alleged robbers in the capital on Tuesday and Wednesday.

Members of the Detective Branch (DB) of Dhaka Metropolitan Police (DMP) arrested them from Tejgaon and Mitford areas.

They captured eight robbers and muggers from Karwan Bazar and Farmgate at about 9:15 pm on Tuesday.

They are Lokman Hossain, 30, Rabbi Molla, 21, Asad Mandal, 34, Rana Mia, 20, Nasim alias Nayeem, 20, Hasan Sheikh, 20, Mohammad Babu, 20, and Mohammad Hasan, 18.

Six knives and two machetes were seized from them, said Additional Commissioner (DB) of DMP Harun-Or-Rashid at a press briefing in the DMP media centre on Wednesday.

The arrestees, with their other cohorts, robbed people of their cash and valuables at Kawran Bazar, Farmgate, Satrasta, and other parts of the capital, said the officer.

Meanwhile, the members of DB Lalbagh Division captured 16 members of an inter-district robbery gang from the Mitford area early on Wednesday, said Harun.

Of the arrested, 11 were included in a case, he said.

They are Sumon Chowkidar alias Sumon Mia, 34, Mohammad Mostafa, 32, Arif Hossain, 34, Mohammad Palash, 32, Mohammad Karim, 25, Mohammad Hasan, 18, Ripon alias Akash, 24, Joynal Abedin, 31, Omar Faruk Faisal, 20, Rasel, 24 and Hafizul Islam, 33.

A pistol, a magazine, two bullets, two big knives, a pickup, five CNG-run autos, and some other things were seized from them, said the DB officer. The names of five alleged robbers were not disclosed.

Of the arrestees, Sumon is the ringleader of the gang and he is wanted in 16 criminal cases, including murder, while the other arrestees are wanted in one more case, he said.

The officer informed us that they killed an employee of a jewellery shop during a robbery at the shop.

They mainly committed robbery at Old Dhaka, Narayanganj and Gazipur, said Harun, adding that they used to commit robbery at gold shops, buses, goods-laden vehicles and others.

Two cases were filed against the 11 arrestees with Kotwali Police Station, he said.

One Abdus Sattar Ahmed told reporters that his pickup carrying poultry was blocked by another pickup on the Dhaka-Sylhey highway at Shibpur in Narsingdi on May 9.

The robbers in another pickup tied and blindfolded the driver and helper of his pickup and hijacked it.

He said that the DB police asked him to come to the DB office.

The man said that the detective police showed him some papers for his pickup. The members of the inter-district robbery gang hijacked his vehicle, he said.
