Awami League (AL) General Secretary Obaidul Quader on Monday said that terming a constitutionally valid and elected government illegal by BNP Secretary General Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir is tantamount to a contravention of the Constitution.

“Bangladesh Nationalist Party Secretary General Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir violated the constitution by making remarks against the incumbent government, which is constitutionally valid and elected by votes,” he said in a statement.

Quader, also the road transport and bridges minister, said Fakhrul’s demand for restoration of democracy has actually ‘terrified’ people all over the country.

How democracy could be brought back, as it already exists, he said. The heinous arson attacks BNP launched in the name of movement and reviving democracy are still etched in people’s memory, he said.

The Awami League, which is imbued with the spirit of the War of Liberation, is determined to strengthen the democratic values of the country, Quader said.

“The BNP’s activities are contrary to democratic values since its birth. BNP has been established not only by destroying democracy but also by marring the spirit of the War of Liberation. The party is the main obstacle to the establishment of democratic values, culture and ideology,” he said, adding that AL has been ceaselessly fighting for the freedom of the people.

He claimed that during its rule, BNP was isolated from people due to its anti-people stance and widespread corruption.

Democracy of Bangladesh is based on strong foundation under the leadership of Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina, said the AL spokesperson.

“So, no conspiracy can hinder the progress of Bangladesh,” Quader added.
