SIM cloning racket steals Tk 10m from mobile banking agents

A phone SIM card cloning racket has stolen Tk 10 million from around 200 mobile banking agents.

Rapid Action Battalion-4 (RAB) arrested three members of the racket from Faridpur and Munshiganj between Tuesday afternoon and Wednesday morning.

The arrestees are Nuruzzaman Matubbar, 35, Sajib Matubbar, 21 and Sumon Shikder, 45. Some 24 SIMs and 13 mobile sets were seized from them.

Mozammel Haque, commanding officer of RAB-4, briefed reporters on Wednesday afternoon about the arrests.

He said the arrestees and their cohorts so far embezzled about Tk 10 million from about 200 victims.

During primary interrogation, they said they committed the crimes in collaboration with some dishonest distribution sales representatives (DSR) and sales representatives (SR) of SIM companies, some mobile banking agents and others, said the RAB officer.

They first collected NID numbers of working-class people and took SIM cards by registering in those people’s names, according to the officer.

They later cloned the SIM cards of mobile banking agents and officers of the banking sites through apps.

They then phoned the targeted agents impersonating officers of mobile banking services’ head offices and tactfully learnt their PINs.

When a handsome amount of money entered the accounts of agents, the criminals took the money to their control and later withdrew through their connected agents.

The racket has 20 to 25 members across the country, Mozammel said.

The criminals committed the crimes in three groups.

On the sharing of money, he said that SR took Tk 20,000-25,000 against every Tk 100,000  they stole and dishonest agents took Tk 10,000-12,000 while the rest Tk 65,000-70,000 was taken by the racket members.

Legal action against the arrestees is underway, RAB said.
