Fortune Barishal skipper Shakib Al Hasan was hopeful to get a sporting wicket during the Bangabandhu Bangladesh Premier League T20, scheduled to start from today in Mirpur.

Barishal will take on Chattogram Challengers in the opening game of the eighth edition of the tournament at the Sher-e-Bangla National Stadium in Mirpur. Minister Dhaka will start their campaign against Khulna Tigers later in the day.

“Hopefully, we will get a sporting wicket and there will be something for everyone. I think BPL will start with a good match,” Shakib told reporters on Thursday.

“We are a very balanced side but we can get a clear picture after the start of the tournament. After one or two games we can analyze better about our opponents,” said Shakib, adding that he is not putting any extra pressure to be the champion.

“If we can be champions it is good but we can’t help it if we are unable to achieve it. All we can do is to play to the best of our ability and we will try to do that,” he added.

Apart from Shakib, local players like Nurul Hasan, Najmul Hossain Shanto, Towhid Hridoy, Ziaur Rahman, Nayeem Hasan and Taijul Islam will represent Barishal in the tournament while Mujeeb Ur Rahman, Chris Gayle, Alzarri Joseph and Dwayne Bravo are their foreign recruits.

However, Mujeeb and Gayle are expected to join their side slightly later. Meanwhile, Chattogram skipper Mehidy Hasan said that they have full faith in their young blood.

Players like Afif Hossain, Shamim Hossain and Zakir Hasan are all in-form while they have the overseas trio of Kennar Lewis, Will Jacks and Chadwick Walton to complement them well. “The management kept faith in young blood and we are hopeful that they will deliver. All of us have to take the challenge and we are looking forward to it,” he said.

Khulna Tigers skipper Mushfiqur Rahim said that he’s keen to win one BPL title and was hoping to achieve it this season. “I want to win one BPL title and hopefully I can make it this time,” said Mushfiqur. “We want to end the group phase in one or two and then look forward,” he added.

Players like Mahedi Hasan, Soumya Sarkar, Kamrul Islam, Farhad Reza, Yasir Ali, Seekkuge Prasanna, Sikandar Raza, Thisara Perera, Naveenul Huq and Andre Fletcher will represent Khulna in the upcoming BPL.

Meanwhile, Mahmudullah, who will be leading the Dhaka team, said that toss will play a key role in the evening game considering dew is expected to be a big factor.

“I think toss will play a big part,” said Mahmudullah, adding that they are not losing their sleep over the wicket.

“We can’t lose our sleep thinking too much about the wicket and we will have to play it thinking that the wicket will be good,” he said.

Dhaka will go into the tournament having players like Mashrafe Mortaza, Isuru Udana, Qais Ahmad, Najibullah Zadran, Tamim Iqbal, Rubel Hossain and Andre Russell alongside Mahmudullah.

However, they will be missing experienced Mashrafe in the opening two games due to his injury.
