At least 219 illegal structures, including residential buildings and markets on the bank of Buriganga river, have been demolished in a six-day joint drive conducted by the Dhaka district administration and the Bangladesh Inland Water Transport Authority.
The drive started on Dember 26 last year, following a writ petition filed at the High Court.
On Sunday, the last day of the drive, a total of 28 illegal structures in the old Buriganga channel under Kamrginairchar were demolished.

Two three-story buildings, two one-storey structures, 16 semi-concrete houses and a two-storey tin-shed house were among the structures, which were pulled down during the drive.
Two concrete walls were also demolished and 1.5 acres of land was freed from illegal grabbers by conducting mobile courts.
