Candidate dies on polls eve

CHATTOGRAM: A member candidate died hours before the voting in the Union Parishad (UP) election in Karnaphuli upazila started on Sunday.

The deceased identified as Md Monir Uddin Talukder was a candidate for Ward No 8 of Shikalbaha union with ‘football’ symbol.

Monir, who was active in the election campaign, died of cardiac failure at his residence early Sunday, said Upazila Assistant Commissioner (Land) Shirin Akter.

However, no major incident took place in the elections at three upazilas of the district on Sunday.

Voting at three centres in two unions of Patiya upazila was suspended after miscreants snatched ballot papers away from the centres.

Patiya Upazila Nirbahi Officer (UNO) Md Arafat Al Hosaini said voting at the three poling centres -- Ramesh Fanindra Smriti Pathagar of Ward No 4 and Dhaurdenga Sardacharan High School of Ward No 8 under Chhanhara union and Saidar Government Primary School of Ward No 6 under Jiri union -- was suspended temporarily.
