Two accused killed in ‘gunfight’ with cops

Two accused in the case filed over the murder of Cumilla ward councillor Syed Mohammad Sohel and his aide Haripada Das were killed in a ‘gunfight’ with police in Shangraish Balumahal area near the Gomti embankment on the outskirts of the city early Tuesday.

The deceased were identified as Sabbir Hossain, 28, and Sajon, 32.

Satyajit Barua, officer-in-charge of Cumilla District Detective Branch of Police, said acting on secret information that the accused were staying at Shangraish and Nabagram area of the city, several teams of police conducted drives at about 12:15am.

“Sensing police presence in the area, the criminals started firing at the law enforcers, forcing them to retaliate,” he added.

The attackers fled, but two people were found bullet-hit at the scene. They were rushed to Comilla Medical College Hospital where doctors declared them dead, the police officer said.

The law enforcers also recovered guns and ammunition from the spot.

Three policemen were also wounded in the ‘gunfight’. They were undergoing treatment in a police hospital.

The bodies were kept in Cumilla Medical College Hospital for autopsy.

A case was filed with Cumilla Model Police Station in this connection. On November 22, masked gunmen shot Sohel and his aide at the councillor's office in Pathuriapara area of Cumilla city.
