Bashundhara Kings have tasted both success and failure in the last season 2020-21. To one side, there were two major titles in domestic football -- Federation Cup and Premier League; to another side, an unfortunate elimination from AFC Cup 2021. But no doubt both experiences inspired the club authority to form a stronger side for this season 2021-22.

However, the giants will start their new season today with lots of expectations and hopes. Kings will play their first match against Bangladesh Navy Football Club in the ongoing Independence Cup at the Bir Sherestha Shaheed Sepoy Mostafa Kamal Stadium in Kamlapur at 7:15pm while Chattogram Abahoni Ltd will play against Bangladesh Police Football Club earlier this day at the same venue at 4:00pm.

“We have strengthened the squad again and now we are ready to go for another good season. Our idea is always improving from the previous season based on performance. Nowadays the team are shaping well through the training practices, and reaching the desired fitness level,” Kings’ Spanish coach Oscar Bruzon told The Daily Sun on Monday.

“We have signed great players (local and international) and we feel we are ready and excited to start competing. We are aware of the expectations and high demands of the competition but we are determined and confident to keep contributing to enlarge the list of Club titles,” he said ahead of the team’s practice session at the Bashundhara Sports Complex.

The club newly registered former Bosnian national player Stojan Vranjes while retaining Robson Robinho, Jonathan Fernandes Reis and Khaled Shafiei in their 33-member squad. Among the local players, the club retained -- Zico, Tapu, Arafat, Sufil, Zoni, SK Rana, Bishwanath, Fahad, Biplo, Ibrahim, Matin, Sabuz, Tariq, Rimon, Nawbab and Kingsley while newly signed Sumon Reza, Sohel Rana and Mehedi Hasan.

“Stojan was always amongst our preferred options, we are glad about the addition of a player with this experience, skills and characteristics. He was the best player, captain, maximum scorer and champion of Bosnia Top Division last year. He is in top form and our idea is that he will help us to evolve within our game model to keep delivering the best performances and results,” the coach ended.

Meanwhile, Dhaka Abahani Ltd beat Championship League Champions Swadhinata Krira Sangha by 2-1 goals in their first match of the Independence Cup on Monday.

Mehedi Hasan Royel and Raphael Augusto scored one each for Abahani in the 29th and 74th minutes while Nodirbek Mavlonov reduced the margin for Swadhinata in the 91st minutes of the game.
