BGB man among 13 killed in post-polls violence

At least 13 people including a Border Guard Bangladesh (BGB) man were killed, most by bullets, and over 200 were injured in separate post-Union Parishad (UP) election violence in different parts of the country including Thakurgaon and Munshiganj.

In Thakurgaon, four people have been killed in violence in Pirganj upazila's Khangaon union in Pirganj upazila of the district over the announcement of election results.

Majharul, 40, and HSC candidate Aditya Roy, 18, died on the way to Rangpur Medical College Hospital early Monday while Rahima Begum died at the hospital in the morning.

Earlier on Sunday night, a man named Shahpali (28) died on the spot. Majharul's uncle Ajmal said, "After Majharul was shot in the body, we admitted him to the local hospital with the help of the locals." Seeing the deterioration of his condition, I took him to Rangpur Medical College. But on the way, he fell into the lap of death.

Aditya Roy's cousin Ratikant Roy said, "My brother is an HSC candidate." He did not go there to take part in the violence. He went there to be part of the voting ceremony. But he had to return as a corpse. Rahima Begum's husband Abdul Baki said, "My wife died at the hospital around 10:00 am."

According to Shagen, a village police officer on duty at the polling station on Sunday night, the presiding officer was late in announcing the results after the polls closed.

Supporters of independent chairman candidate Nuruzzaman have been arguing with the presiding officer over the issue.

Later, the presiding officer declared the boat candidate Shahid Hossain as the winner. After the results were announced, some unhappy locals blocked the polling station. The presiding officer was able to escape. However, three policemen and 12-13 Ansar members were trapped in a room.

Village Police Sagen further said, The BGB members fired shots in response to the attack of the angry locals.

One person was killed and four others were injured in the firing. Pirganj Police Officer-in-Charge (OC) Jahangir Alam said that the members in charge of security could not bring the situation under control in any way.

One person was killed on the spot when the BGB members opened fire to control the situation. Three others were injured and died. The bodies of the three were recovered and taken to the police station.

In Nilphamari, a BGB man was beaten to death at Doliram Majapara centre of Garagram union on Sunday night. The deceased was identified as Rubel Hossain, 30.

Witnesses said, rejecting the election result, supporters of plough symbol chairman candidate Maruf Hossain equipped with lethal weapons attacked the polling centre at around 9:00 pm. In self-defence, the BGB man took shelter in a room where the supporters beat him mercilessly leaving him dead. Later, police recovered the body of the BGB man from there. 

In Narsingdi, two people identified as Arief Hossain 28, an auto-rickshaw driver and another Farid Miah were killed in separate post-poll violence at Chanderkandi of Raypura and Uttorbakharnagar union parishads in the district on Sunday night. 

In another incident, two people have been killed in Munshiganj in separate incidents of violence on Sunday, after polls closed for the union council elections, police said.

The incidents were reported from the Banglabazar and Panchashar unions near the district town, said Additional Superintendent of Police Sumon Dev.

Any cases are yet to be filed over the killings, said the senior police officer.

The victims were identified as Shakil, 30, and Riazul Sheikh, 70.

Shakil died when a clash broke out around 6.30 pm between supporters of rival member candidates, Arfa Begum and Rabia Begum over a delay in the announcement of results at a polling station in Banglabazar union.

He was the nephew of the member-elect Rabia Begum.

Riazul Sheikh, a relative of independent candidate Ali Siddique, was killed in an attack carried out by the supporters of rival candidate Golam Mostafa in Panchasar union at 8:00 pm, claimed victim's wife Bilkis Begum.

Both of the victims were taken to the Munshiganj General Hospital.

“Riazul Sheikh was brought dead to the hospital. The cause of death can be only confirmed after an autopsy,” said Dr Shoibal Basak of the emergency department.

Shakil was taken to the hospital with wounds inflicted by sharp weapons, he said before adding “We suspect he died of excessive bleeding.”

Earlier, three people were killed in Jashore, Khulna and Lakshmipu districts in violence during the 3rd phase Union Parishad elections on Sunday.
