Police arrested the chief of ‘Online Dawah’ unit of the banned militant outfit Ansar Al Islam from the capital’s Uttara on Sunday.
The arrestee is Hasibur Rahman alias Azzam Al Galib, 21. He is a student of a private university in Dhaka. He is from Mohipur in Patuakhali.
Md Asaduzzaman, chief of the CTTC under Dhaka Metropolitan Police, disclosed this at a press briefing at DMP media centre in the city on the day.
“Galib was one of the ‘triratnas’ (three jewels) of online militancy. We hope that online militancy will be reduced by 80 percent thanks to the arrest of Galib. Earlier, police arrested two other triratnas: Al Amin Siddique and Jobaida Siddique Nabila,” the officer said.
“After passing SSC in 2016, Galib got admitted to a college. He got involved in radicalism during his college life. He read a lot of books containing the ideologies of extremism,” the officer said.
“He first got connected to ‘Jamshed Hasan’ and ‘Jamshed Hossain,’ the two facebook IDs that were circulating ideologies of militancy of Ansar Al Islam and international militant organisation Al-Qaeda. In 2019, he began writing on the ideologies by opening a facebook ID ‘Azzab Al Galib.’ He also opened a social media app named ‘Telegarm’. Later, he began recruiting youths through different social media sites,” he said.
Galib was collecting funds for seeking bails of those members of Ansar Al Islam, who were in jail, said Asaduzzaman.
