Patient dies as ward boy removes oxygen mask

A patient has died in a hospital in Bogura soon after his oxygen mask was removed by a ward boy for non-payment of a satisfactory tip.

The tragic incident took place in Shaheed Ziaur Rahman Medical College Hospital on Tuesday night.

The deceased was identified as Bikash Chandra Karmaker, 15, of Putimari village in Saghata upazila of Gaibandha.

Shortly after the incident, the ward boy, Md Asaduzzaman, went into hiding. Meanwhile, the hospital authorities have formed a four-member committee to investigate the incident.

The committee has been asked to submit a probe report within five working days, said Abdul Wadud, deputy director of the hospital.

Bikash, who was injured in a road accident on Tuesday, was first admitted to Saghata Upazila Health Complex.

Later, he was shifted to Shaheed Ziaur Rahman Medical College Hospital for better treatment.

Shachin Chandra Karmar, paternal uncle of the victim, said his nephew worked at a workshop at Saghata in Gaibandha.

An on-duty doctor arranged an oxygen cylinder at the emergency department and put the mask on his mouth.

But ward boy Asaduzzaman demanded a tip of Tk 200. Tk 150 was given to him.

“Asaduzzaman was annoyed about the less payment of the money and removed the oxygen mask and took the cylinder away,” Shachin said.

“Minutes after the removal of the oxygen mask, Bikash Chandra died,” he said.
