Rapid Action Battalion (RAB) busted an arms factory adjacent to a Rohingya camp in Ukhiya upazila of Cox’s Bazar district early Monday.

The elite force also recovered 10 weapons and a huge cache of arms-making equipment from the factory, and arrested three Rohingyas.

The arrestees are Md Baitullah, 19, his brother Habib Ullah of Block-C of Kutupalong Camp and Mohammad Hasun, 24, of Block-G of the camp.

Commanding Officer of RAB-15 Lt Col Khairul Islam said law enforcers raided the arms factory near Kutupalong Extension-4 Rohingya Camp in the early hours on a tip-off. “We had information that a group had set up an arms factory in the hilly area and had been manufacturing weapons for some time. They had been supplying weapons to Rohingya terrorists,” he said.

“Based on the information, one of our teams launched an operation in the deep hills of the Kutupalong camp in the early hours. The terrorists opened fire on the RAB team when they reached there forcing them to fire back that triggered a gunfight,” he said.

After the gun battle that lasted four hours, the RAB team took control of the arms factory and seized 10 firearms and arms-making materials, Khairul said, adding that the elite force members detained three of the criminals while the rest fled.

Later, the arrestees were handed over to Ukhiya Police Station.   During primary interrogation, the arrestees said they used to supply weapons manufactured in the arms factory to criminal gangs active in Rohingya camps.
