4 held over attack on Noakhali temple

Four people were arrested from Dhaka, Narayanganj and Noakhali on Sunday night in connection with the attack on a temple at Begumganj in Noakhali on October 15.

The arrestees were identified as Monir Hossain alias Rubel, 28, Jakir Hossain alias Rabbi, 20, Mohammad Ripon, 21 and Nazrul Islam alias Sohag, 36, said Commander Khandaker Al Moin, director (legal and media wing) of the RAB, at a press briefing in the capital on Monday.

He said members of RAB-11 captured them and recovered many valuables they stole from the Hindu temple.

Seven idols made of brass, three vermillion boxes, 20 lamp stands, two dhuptis and five panchapradip stands were among the items recovered.

On October 15, a group of people carried out an attack on Sri Sri Radha Madhav Zeeur Temple at Chaumuhoni of the upazila centering on provocative comments and status on facebook defaming Islam.

The four arrestees hailing from Begumganj upazila took part in the attack and looted the temple, which was caught on CTTV cameras, said the director.

During primary interrogation, the arrested men confessed they carried out the attack and stole valuables, said the officer.

Of them, Rubel was wanted in a mugging case with Begumganj Police Station, he said.

Moin also said the next course of legal action against them was underway.
