We are alarmed to know that a murderer in the guise of a madrassa student was lurking around to kill Bashundhara Group Managing Director and Sheikh Russel Krira Chakra Limited Chairman Sayem Sobhan Anvir. More shocking and serious is the confessional statement made by the suspect upon his arrest on Friday morning. The arrestee disclosed that he was dispatched by Whip Shamsul Haque Chowdhury, MP from Chattogram-12 constituency (Patiya), and his son Nazmul Karim Chowdhury Sharun to assassinate Bashundhara MD. This is an extremely serious allegation against the whip of national parliament and his son. While the prompt action of the police to arrest the suspect is commendable, it must also register a case against the masterminds and conduct an in-depth investigation into the assassination plot.
The arrestee named Saiful Islam Saad, 23, hailing from the whip’s constituency Patiya, informed police that he had a plan to shoot Bashundhara MD during Jum’ah prayers on the same day he was arrested. The whip’s son Sharun promised him that a car would be there outside the mosque so that he could flee the scene immediately. But the plot was revealed just a few hours before Jum’ah prayer, thanks to the tip off from a madrasaha principal in Bashundhara area from where Saad was arrested.
Then the latest plot was hatched when Saad went to Patiya during this year’s Durga Puja festival and met Whip Shamsul and his son. They advised him to shoot Bashundhara MD and gave him a pistol and Tk. 20,000. They also promised that he wouldn’t have to do anything for the rest of his life if he could carry out the plan, as Saad reportedly said during police interrogation.
It was beyond our imagination that a lawmaker and whip of parliament could be involved in such heinous assassination plot. And it occurred in the wake of a growing public outcry against the whip and his son’s long list of corruption and casino scandals. The authorities should leave no stone unturned to get to the bottom of the whole plot and bring the masterminds to justice, because these types of incidents not only set alarm bells ringing among industrialists and businesses, but also tarnish the country’s image in the international arena.
