Abbasuddin’s 120th birth anniv today

Today is the 120th birth anniversary of legendary folk singer Abbasuddin Ahmed. The folk maestro Abbasuddin Ahmed was born in Cooch Behar district of India on October 27, 1901.

 He was famous for Bhawaiya songs which is very popular in Bangladesh particularly in  Rangpur region and Cooch Behar of India. 

Abbasuddin earned fame during his school days through participation in musical soirees and cultural events.

Brief tutelage from Ustad Jamiruddin Khan in Kolkata, and later from Ustad Kader Buksh in Murshidabad helped the folk maestro boost his gifted flair.

Vocal disciplines like Bhawaiya and Chatka from greater Rangpur and Cooch Behar were some of Abbasuddin’s specialties.

The iconic singer had equal capabilities in other types of songs in modern, patriotic and Islamic genres.

Folk genre songs such as Kaari, Saari, Bhatiyali, Murshidi, Bichchhedi, Marsiya, Dehatatya and Pala Gaan were also rendered by Abbasuddin with tremendous acclaim from fans.

Popular compositions of famous poets Kazi Nazrul Islam, Jasimuddin and Ghulam Mustafa were sung by Abbasuddin. ‘Ramzaner Oi Rozar Sheshey’, ‘Ashibey Tumi Jaani Priyo’, and ‘Snigdha Shyam Beni Borno’ are among his best songs.

For his invaluable contribution to music, late Abbasuddin was honoured with the Pride of Performance Award in 1960, Shilpakala Academy Award in 1979 and Independence Day Award in 1981, all in posthumous state.

Abbasuddin Ahmed passed away on December 30, 1959.
