Members of Rapid Action Battalion (RAB) arrested eight people, including director of Karnaphuli Multipurpose Cooperative Society Limited (KMCSL), from its head office in the capital’s Mirpur on Monday on charges of defrauding clients of a hefty amount of money.

A team of RAB-4 raided the office in Mirpur-11 and arrested them, including its Director Shakil Ahmed, said Sajedul Islam Sajal, media officer of the RAB-4.

After getting specific information, they conducted the raid and arrested them.

The RAB will disclose the findings of the drive at a press briefing at its media centre in Kawran Bazar around 11:00am today.

Earlier on October 22, about 100 clients of the cooperative society took position in front of the office and demanded refunds of their money they deposited with the organisation.

At that time, the authorities of the KMCSL called some clients into the office and physically tortured them.

The clients alleged that they opened DPS with the cooperative society for a term of five years and deposited DPS installments properly. When the tenure of the DPS ended, they demanded their money, but the authorities concerned did not pay.

They rather were harassing the clients, they said.

Kawser Mahmud, sub-inspector of Pallabi Police Station, said that they already received several general diaries against the KMCSL as it was not repaying money of the clients.
