Dhaka secure victory in NCL as Chattogram in line

Dhaka Division took only 17 balls to score the remaining 18 runs on the third day as they completed a seven-wicket victory over Sylhet Division in their opening round tier-1 match of the ongoing 23rd National Cricket League in Sylhet on Tuesday.

Overnight batsmen Rakibul Hasan (15 not out) and Taibur Rahman (eight not out) ensured no more damage in their innings as they reached 66-3 to give their side the first win in the competition.

Dhaka earlier made 176 runs in their first innings while Sylhet could only score 67 and 174 runs respectively in their innings.

In the other tier -1 match, Rangpur Division took a 39-run lead over Khulna Division after they scored 42-0 in their second innings at stumps of day three at the Sylhet International Cricket Stadium.

Khulna, which resumed on 171-4, were earlier bowled out for 260 runs in their first innings and managed only a three-run lead over Rangpur, which made 257 runs in their first innings.

Anamul Haque made the highest 84 runs for Khulna while Rangpur’s Sohrawordi Shuvo finished with 6-87.

Meanwhile, Chattogram Division will need only 62 runs with eight wickets in hand on the final day of their first-round match against Rajshahi Division after they bowled their opponents all out for 259 runs in their second innings at the Zahur Ahmed Chowdhury Stadium in Chattogram.

Off-spinner Nayeem Hasan and pacer Mehedi Hasan claimed four and three wickets respectively for Chattogram while Rajshahi’s Towhid Hridoy and Jahurul Islam made 68 and 53 runs respectively.

Chattogram, which were set a target of 77 runs, finished the day on 15-2 and will be favourites to win the contest.

In the other tier-2 match in Cox’s Bazar, Barishal Division batsmen Salman Hossain and Shamsul Islam scored 69 and 58 runs respectively to help their side make 241 runs in their first innings and earn only a two-run lead over Dhaka Metropolis.

Metro’s Sharifullah and Shohidul Islam finished with 5-34 and 4-41 respectively.

Metro finished the third day’s play with 25-0 with their openers - Shadman Islam and Rakin Ahmed remaining unbeaten on 12 and 13 runs respectively.
