Police nabbed two youths on charges of extorting money from some Jubo League (JL) leaders and businessmen by cloning the SIM card of JL Chairman Sheikh Fazle Shams Parash and calling the victims using the number.

A Dhaka court granted police permission to interrogate the two in their custody for three days.

Cyber Crime Division of Dhaka Metropolitan Police (DMP) arrested the youths -- Firoz Khandaker and Rakibul who were the members of a fraud gang – in Faridpur on Tuesday morning, said Dhruba Jyotirmaya Gop, assistant commissioner of the Division.

Using the phone number, they contacted presidents and conveners of JL’s Gaibandha, Netrokona, Pabna, Sunamganj and some other district units and demanded  a handsome amount of money from them in the name of the party’s subscription fee, he said. They rang the President of JL’s Gaibandha district unit Sardar Mohammad Shahin Hasan Loton on October 9 and asked him to send a large amount of money to a Rocket number. They also called Convener of JL’s Netrokona district unit Jony, JL leader of Sunamganj Chapal and Convener of Pabna unit Sony Biswas.

On October 15, Barrister Rana Tajuddin Khan, on the behalf of JL Chairman Parash, filed a case at Banani Police Station.

Firoz Khandaker withdrew the money from different ATM booths and mobile banking agent offices in Khilgaon and Keraniganj.
