Dhaka has sought support from CICA, a multi-national forum comprising 27 countries for enhancing cooperation towards promoting peace, security and stability in Asia, for immediate return of 1.1 million forcibly displaced Myanmar nationals known as Rohingya.
Secretary (West) of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs Shabbir Ahmad Chowdhury made the call during the Sixth Ministerial Meeting of Foreign Ministers of CICA (Conference on Interaction and Confidence Building Measures in Asia) held on October 11-12 in Nur-Sultan, Kazakhstan.
He also sought support in solving the Rohingya crisis to minimize the security threats in the region.
CICA Member States agreed and urged upon safe, sustainable and dignified repatriation of Rohingyas to their homeland.
Shabbir Ahmad apprised the leaders of the hard-won uninterrupted progress made by Bangladesh towards the attainment of 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) with its goal of becoming a developed country by 2041. He emphasized on the role of the Government of Bangladesh in adopting a “whole-of-government” and “whole-of-society” approach for implementation and attainment of the SDGs. There is no doubt that Bangladesh has become a role model for the whole world, he added.
He assured of Bangladesh’s continuous support to the CICA initiatives. In addition to that, he highlighted some common challenges that can only be adequately and effectively addressed through mutual trust and cooperation underpinned by multilateral arrangements like CICA.
He called for united action by the leaders to accelerate implementation of the Paris Agreement to advance global climate progress.
Shabbir Ahmad thanked Kazakhstan and CICA Secretariat for arranging the Ministerial at this trying time.
He led Bangladesh delegation to the 6th Ministerial Meeting of Foreign Ministers of CICA. Zokey Ahad, Director General (RO) facilitated participation of Bangladesh delegation to the CICA Ministerial.
Foreign Ministers, Deputy Foreign Ministers and other delegates of the CICA Member States and Observer states participated in the ministerial. The Meeting was chaired by Mukhtar Tileuberdi, Foreign Minister of Kazakhstan.
The meeting ended with issuance of the Declaration on Sixth Ministerial Meeting of Foreign Ministers of CICA.
