A last-minute goal from forward Pushkor Khisa Mimo secured champions Abahani Limited a hard-fought 1-0 goal win over arch-rivals Mohammedan Sporting Club in the season’s first Dhaka derby at the Maulana Bhashani National Hockey Stadium in the capital on Saturday.
Mimo struck the match-winner for the team in the 59th minute, off a square pass from Mahbub Hossain just thirty seconds before the final whistle in the fourth and last quarter.
Abahani went down to 10-man just four minutes before the final whistle while their attacker Khorshadur Rahman conceded a yellow card and got a five-minute suspension.
Khorshed, however, accidentally hit Mohammedan captain Rasel Mahmud Jimmy with his stick during a body tussle in the centre of the field.
The match heated up in the third quarter when Jimmy appealed for a penalty corner but the umpire dismissed the appeal.
Mohammedan players left the field showing dissatisfaction with the umpire’s decision and both Abahani and Mohammedan fans also got excited at that time but the Police controlled the situation smartly.
The match resumed again after seven minutes with the help of match officials, though the call was still in the favour of Abahani.
The day’s other match in the same group between Police Sporting Club and Ajax Sporting Club ended in a 1-1 draw at the same venue.
