A member candidate of a union parishad (UP) election in Bagerhat had an innocent woman murdered by a hired killer to set up his rival candidate and thus emerging victorious in the election race.

Halim Howlader, 52, who masterminded the murder, however, could not win the election held on September 20.

The ill-fated, impoverished woman, Parul Begum, 45, who is no relation to Howlader, hails from Gangni Upazila in Meherpur.

Dhaka district unit of Police Bureau of Investigation (PBI) arrested Howlader, hired killer Jamal Howlader alias Samaduzzamal, 50, and his accomplice Mashiur Rahman Milon, 46, in Bagerhat and Dhaka in between September 22 and September 26.

PBI chief Banaj Kumar Majumder disclosed the information at a press briefing at the PBI Headquarters in the capital on Monday.

He said Halim was the member of Ward 5 under Chila Union 6 in Mongla upazila of the district.

“There were three member candidates – Howlader, Belal and Asharat – in the recently held polls. Howlader, who was the former member, was in fear of being defeated by Belal, who is his neighbour.

“So, he hatched a plot to keep Belal away from the poll race. He then contacted Jamal (hired killer) who is from Pirojpur. He asked Jamal to kill a person in order to frame Belal in a murder case.

“Jamal agreed to implement the evil plot in exchange for Tk 30,000. The mastermind gave Jamal Tk 5,000 in advance and a photocopy of Belal’s NID. “Later, Jamal contacted Milon and asked if he knew any woman. Milon then introduced Parul, who was a hawker, to Jamal.

“Jamal pretended to be in love with her and made a false promise of marriage. They rented a room at a house in Namabazar of Savar on September 7. On that night, Jamal suffocated her to death and fled the scene leaving the photocopy of the NID beside her body.”

Banaj Kumar Majumder said the accused made a confession before a Dhaka court.
