Victim, killer identified

Police unraveled the mystery of a clueless murder of a young woman whose body was found inside a trunk left in a bus in Chattogram in 2015.

They also identified the killer and arrested him from Cumilla subsequently.

The victim is Shampa Begum, daughter of Ilias Sheikh of Dewana Uttarapara at Doulatpur in Khulna while the killer is Rezaul Karim Swapan who was sent on forced retirement from the Navy.

Police Bureau of Investigation’s (PBI) Dhaka Metro North unit indentified the deceased and captured Swapan from the EPZ area of Cumilla on Friday morning.

DIG of police Banaj Kumar Majumder, also chief of the PBI, revealed this to reporters at the PBI headquarters in Dhanmondi of the capital on Saturday.

Swapan and Shampa lived together at a house in Chattogram and often locked in argument resulting in her murder, he said.

According to the officer, an unknown man put a trunk at a bus of Eagle Paribahan from AK Khan crossing in Chattogram at about 9:00am on May 3 in 2015.

The man gave a ticket to the helper of the bus and told him that the passenger of the ticket would get on the vehicle from its Vatiari counter and the passenger belonged to the trunk. Picking passengers from the counter, the bus reached Gabtali in the capital around 5:45pm.  All the passengers got down, but none took the trunk. The bus staffers found it very heavy and suspected something wrong, and informed police of the matter.

Police opened it and found the body of a woman. The body was sent to a hospital for autopsy after completing inquest report.  SI of Darussalam Police Station Jahanur Ali filed a murder case with the police station on that day. Later on, the body was buried at a graveyard as an unclaimed one.

An SI of the police station investigated the case for three months, but could not make any headway. Afterwards, the Criminal Investigation Department (CID) investigated the case for long four years, but nothing yielded.  The PBI’s Dhaka Metro North unit received the case in December, 2019.  Inspector Ashrafuzzaman, investigation officer (IO) under the direction of the unit chief SP Jahangir Alam began collecting general diaries lodged over missing incidents at different police stations of Chattogram in 2015.

One of the GDs was lodged by Abdul Mannan with Pahartali Police Station on June 10 on that year. The GD was filed for missing of Shampa.

The family members of the victim told the IO that Shampa got acquainted with Swapan  in 2013 when the killer was on duty in Khulna. They developed an affair. After a few days, Swapan moved to Chhatogram.  Shampa also came with him and began to live together without marriage.

As they did not go on a good relation and often locked in argument, he suffocated her to death, and put the body in the trunk to conceal his crime.

In the meantime, Swapan was set on forced retirement in 2019. After that, he began to deal in medicine. He opened a Youtube channel in which he used to provide health trips.
