CHATTOGRAM: Senior teacher Abdus Salam Chatgami died after an hour of being appointed as the director general (DG) of Al Jamiatul Ahlia Darul Ulum Moinul Islam Madrasa at Hathazari upazila in the district on Wednesday.

He was 80, hailed from Anwara upazila in the district. Madrasa Shura committee member Salauddin Nanupuri said Abdus Salam fell unconscious soon after the meeting decided to make him the DG of Hathazari Madrasa around 11:45am.

He was rushed to Hathazari Upazila Health Complex where the attending doctors declared him dead, he said.

Sources said Abdus Salam had been suffering from fever and cold for the past few days and old-age complications.

Mentionable, Abdus Salam was appointed in the post of DG after Hefazat-e-Islam Founding Ameer and Hathazari madrasa DG Allama Ahmed Shafi died on September 18 last year.

Since then the post was vacant and the Shurah committee assigned Mufti Abdus Salam, Allama Sheikh Ahmad and Md Yahiya as the Muhtamim to run the madrasa following the day.

Abdus Salam had been serving as a senior teacher of the madrasa for long. He was also an adviser of Hefazat-e-Islam. However, the Shura committee made Md Yahiya as acting DG of the madarasa after the death of Abdus Salam on Wednesday.
