Attack on Hasina's Motorcade

Appeals of 6 convicts rejected

A Satkhira court on Wednesday scrapped appeals of six people convicted and sentenced to different jail terms in a case lodged over the 2002 attack on the motorcade of the then leader of the opposition and incumbent Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina in the district, reports BSS.

Satkhira District and Sessions Judge Sheikh Mofijur Rahman passed the order upholding February 4, 2021 judgement of Satkhira Chief Judicial Magistrate Court in the case.

The court in its judgement had sentenced a total of 50 men including former BNP lawmaker Habibul Islam Habib to different jail terms. Of the convicts, Advocate Abdus Samad, Md Golam Rosul, Johurul Islam, Sahabuddin, Abdur Rakib and Monirul Islam had filed three appeal cases, challenging the lower court judgement.

Miscreants hurled bombs on the convoy of the then opposition leader Sheikh Hasina and even shot at her, as her motorcade reached in front of Kolaroa upazila BNP office in Satkhira on August 30, 2002.

They vandalized a couple of vehicles of the convoy too. In 2015, police filed charge sheet in the case.

Of the accused, Rakib alias Rakibur Rahman who was included in the charge- sheet, had filed a plea with the High Court to quash the case, saying he was only 10-year old during the incident.
