Road Transport and Bridges Obaidul Quader on Sunday hoped that elevated expressway from Kawla to Tejgaon Railway Station would be opened for traffic by next year.

“There is a plan to open elevated expressway from Kawla to Tejgaon Railway Station for traffic by next year. Construction work is progressing fast. The traffic congestion in Dhaka city will be reduced to a great extent. Besides, it will have a positive impact on Gross domestic product (GDP),” he said.

Quader, also the Awami League general secretary, said this while talking to reporters after making a visit to Banani areas to see progress of elevated expressway construction work in the capital.

Mentioning that some 30.5 percent construction work of the project has been completed, Quader said some 60 percent construction work from Kawla to Tejgaon has been completed.

“Construction work of the expressway is progressing fast amid coronavirus pandemic. Hopefully, construction work from Kawla to Moghbazar would be completed by 2022 and we will be able to open Kawla to Tejgaon station by next year,” he added.

The minister said there will be a drastic change in the communication system of the country after completion of the expressway.

“Vehicles will be able to travel long distances within a short time. No one will have to waste time on the roads,” he said.

When asked about the complexity of the construction of three pillars of the elevated expressway in the Shahjahanpur area of the capital, Quader said if there is any complication in the project, it will be resolved through coordination. If there is any complication in the design, the work of the elevated expressway will proceed only after resolving it.

Talking over public sufferings that have been created due to construction work of metrorail and other projects, Quader said, “If you want to carry out development activities, you have to suffer a little.”

“However, once the ongoing projects are completed, the people won’t have to suffer on the road anymore,” he said.

Earlier, the project was taken in 2017. Although the work is scheduled to be completed by 2022, progress has been delayed due to various complications including land acquisition.

Now the government has a plan to take the work forward from Kawla to Magbazar through Tejgaon railway station by 2022.
