Awami League General Secretary Obaidul Quader on Monday said their party never intends to destroy Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP) as they don’t believe in such politics.

“Awami League never wanted to wipe out BNP. It is not the politics of our party. On the contrary, the BNP has legitimised the politics of assassination, coup and conspiracy. The party even carried out heinous grenade attack on August 21, 2004 to assassinate Sheikh Hasina,” he said in a statement.

Quader, also the road transport and bridges minister, made the statement after BNP Secretary General Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir criticised the activities of the government as a court denied bail for a Jatiyatabadi Chhatradal leader.

Mentioning that Mirza Fakhrul has shamelessly criticised the government as a Chhatra Dal leader was denied bail by a court, Quader said granting bail to any person is a specific legal process, it is under the sole jurisdiction of the court.

“We do not believe in oppression of anyone. The Awami League is committed to establishing culture of rule of law and justice. Legal action will be taken against those individuals or organisations who are involved in violating the peace and order of the state or violating public security and subversive activities,” he said.

“Blaming the government for this reason was politically motivated,” he added.

In the statement, Quader said BNP is almost extinct today as a result of its past activities.

“The BNP somehow survive relying only on the media through giving lip service. Even they didn’t learn from history, nor will it. Zia, who illegally and unconstitutionally seised power by assassinating the Father of the Nation, established the party by staying at the army barracks in violation of the army law and constitution,” the statement reads.
