The country’s football legend and Bangladesh Football Federation President Kazi Salahuddin has been selected in the lifetime achievement category of the newly-introduced Sheikh Kamal National Sports Council Award 2021.

The Ministry for Youth and Sports has announced the award on Wednesday on the eve of the 72nd birth anniversary of freedom fighter Shaheed Captain Sheikh Kamal, the eldest son of Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman and younger brother of Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina.

A total of 10 sports personalities and two organisations have been selected for the award in seven different categories.

Bangladesh Cricket Board has been selected in the best sports association category while Archer Ruman Shana, weightlifter Mabia Akter Simanta and swimmer Mahfuza Khatun Shila have been selected in the best athlete category.

Cricketer Akbar Ali, chess player Mohammad Fahad Rahman and footballer Unnoti Khatun have been named in the best emerging athlete category.

Both Manzur Kader of Sheikh Jamal Dhanmondi Club and Kyaw Shwe Hla of Bangladesh Karate Federation have been selected in the best organizer category.

Muhammad Kamruzzaman will receive the best sports journalist award while Walton Group is selected in the best sponsor category.

“He (Sheikh Kamal) is the pioneer of the country’s sports and cultural movements. He played a vital role in our liberation war. After the war, he tried to introduce the modern style of sports here. He had great intellect and organizational skill,” State Minister for Youth and Sports Zahid Ahsan Russell said during a virtual press conference from Tokyo on Wednesday.

“We introduced this award named after him to commemorate his contribution to sports…I would like to congratulate all recipients of this prestigious award. I also believe this award will also inspire others to do their best in the future for the country,” he added.

The awards will be handed over to the winners today at the Sheikh Kamal Auditorium of the NSC building on the occasion of the 72nd birth anniversary of Sheikh Kamal.

Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina will be virtually present at the ceremony as the chief guest.

Lifetime achievement award: Kazi Salahuddin

Best athlete: Ruman Shana, Mabia Akter Simanta and Mahfuza Khatun Shila

Best organiser: Manzur Kader and Kyaw Shwe Hla

Best emerging athlete: Akbar Ali, Mohammad Fahad Rahman and Unnoti Khatun

Best sports association: Bangladesh Cricket Board

Best sports journalist: Muhammad Kamruzzaman

Best sponsor: Walton
