Bangladeshi swimmers Ariful Islam and Junaina Ahmed will compete in their respective event of the ongoing 32nd Summer Olympics at Tokyo Aquatics Centre today.

Ariful will take part in the men’s 50m freestyle - Heat 4 while Junaina will compete in the women’s 50m freestyle - Heat 3 respectively.

The top 16 swimmers from the qualifying round will progress to the semifinals of both events.

The 22-year Ariful said that both he and Junaina will try to improve their timings during their qualifying events.

Both Ariful and Junaina are taking part in their first Olympics after they received wildcards for the biggest sporting event.

“It’s not possible to earn a medal here. We have to be practical. My target is to improve my timings,” Ariful, who carried the Bangladesh flag during the opening ceremony, told The Daily Sun on Thursday.

“Both I and Junaina practised a lot here. Both of us have the same target. We are fully prepared,” he added.

Ariful’s best timing in 50m freestyle is 24.92 seconds while the 18-year old Junaina’s best timing is 30.96 seconds which they recorded during the FINA World Championships in South Korea in 2019.
