University Grants Commission (UGC) Chairman Prof Dr Kazi Shahidullah on Monday urged the universities to provide quality online education amid the Covid-19 pandemic.

“Online education has become a part of our lives amid the coronavirus pandemic.  So, improvement of quality of online education is a must now.

“Don’t just give virtual lectures. It is also important to make sure students participate in online learning. Otherwise, online education won’t be effective,” he said.

The UGC chairman came up with the instructions virtually after inaugurating a five-day workshop on creation of open resource, utilization and online education for the teachers of higher educational institutions.

Prof Shahidullah further said there are lots of challenges that need to be addressed with a view to making online education effective. It will not be possible to bring all students under online education without ensuring power supply in all parts of the country as well as strong network services, he said.

The electricity network has improved significantly as a result of special initiatives taken by the government, but the internet is not available in many parts of the country, he added.

“Moreover, a number of students do not have the ability to purchase the device. In this regard, UGC has provided loans to public university students to buy devices.”

Prof Shahidullah said blended learning will not be effective unless teachers’ skill on the system is enhanced.

“To make this system sustainable, UGC is working to formulate blended learning policy.” UGC and Commonwealth Educational Media Center for Asia are jointly arranging the event where a total of 500 teachers from 10 universities are participating.

UGC members Prof Sazzad Hossain and Prof Md Abu Taher also spoke at the virtual event, among others.
