‘I needed to get this thorn out of me’

Argentine superstar Lionel Messi expressed his joy and felt relieved after winning his first international major title by beating arch-rivals Brazil in the final of Copa America 2021 at Maracana Stadium in Brazil on Sunday.

Argentina beat Brazil by 1-0 after Angel Di Maria scored the solitary goal in the first half of the match that ended Argentina’s 28-year wait of winning a senior international title. Messi, who turned 34 last month, earlier played four finals for Argentina before the match but failed to win any of them and he finally ended the curse by lifting the Copa America 2021 title.

"Many times I had had to leave sad and I knew it was going to happen. There is no better moment than this," he said.  "It will be a game that will remain in history." Lionel Messi was moved by the consecration of Argentina at the Maracana. "I needed to get the thorn out of getting something with the national team.

"This group has been getting stronger since the last Copa America and they really deserved it. He always pushed forward and never complained about anything. They were locked up for many days and the objective was clear.

“Many times I dreamed of this moment. My family lived the same as me or worse. We always had to go on vacation and spend sad days without wanting anything. This time it is different," he said.
