University Grants Commission (UGC) asked the private universities to take necessary measures for preparing syllabus of all programmes following the Outcome Based Education (OBE) curriculum template to ensure quality higher education in the country.
UGC sent the letter signed by its director (Strategic Planning and Quality Assurance) Dr Fakhrul Islam to the vice-chancellors of all private universities on Monday for preparing the syllabus following the OBE template by June 30 next year.The letter said a technical committee formed by UGC prepared an OBE template and submitted it to the commission. Later, on June 24 it was approved by the UGC.
It also said OBE system is modern education curriculum. “It is very important to implement the OBE system to ensure quality research and higher education in the global context”, said the letter.
In short, an OBE curriculum means starting with a clear picture of what is important for students, then organising the syllabus, instruction and assessment to ensure such learning. Although, the concept of the OBE is relatively new in Bangladesh, it has been implemented in many countries of the world.
On February 6, the OBE template was approved at the 157th full commission meeting of the UGC while an expert committee was formed to give suggestions for further revised the OBE template and its evaluation system.
