CHATTOGRAM: Local Government, Rural Development and Co-operatives Minister Md Tazul Islam said no industry would be allowed to be developed on the bank of the river Karnaphuli from Chattogram Shah Amanat International Airport to the city on the basis of lease.

He observed that there is no scope to neglect the Chattogram city as it is considered as economic life of the country.

The Chattogram divisional commissioner has been given the responsibility to supervise the ongoing project taken to address the waterlogging in the city, he said.

He will form a committee taking the concerned people including the mayor of Chattogram City Corporation (CCC), said the minister. The minister said these while addressing as the chief guest at a view exchange meeting organised to review the activities taken to address the waterlogging, increase the navigability of the Karnaphuli river, and prevent encroachment and pollution.

The local government minister said encroachment and pollution will be increased while uniqueness and the beauty of the river Karnaphuli will be lost if infrastructures are constructed on the banks of it.

Those will not be allowed under any circumstance as interests of Chattogram port and the country's economy are involved with it, he observed. He directed the concerned authorities to take action against those involved with the encroachment and pollution of the river. The project being implemented by Chattogram Development Authority through Bangladesh Army to address waterlogging will be completed soon and the city dwellers will get the benefits on completion of the project works, he said.

“If there is any fault in the project works, it will be investigated. If found it must be corrected. The committee has been formed in this regard,” said the minister.

Calling upon the concerned people to take measures to stop the levelling of hills in Chattogram, the minister observed that the emphasis should be laid on protection of the hills in collaboration with the law enforcement agencies.

He told the representatives of the service providers not to tarnish the achievements of the government by blaming each other unnecessarily. “Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina is sincere enough for the development of Chattogram. Many projects have been taken in the interest of the Prime Minister for the overall development of the city. If these projects are implemented, Chattogram will be transformed into a modern city,” he added.

Chattogram Divisional Commissioner Kamrul Hasan presided over the meeting while CCC Mayor M Rezaul Karim Chowdhury, Local Government Division Senior Secretary Helaluddin Ahmed, Water Resources Ministry Senior Secretary Kabir Bin Anwar, Chattogram District Council Chairman MA Salam, WASA Managing Director AKM Fazlullah, CDA Chairman Zahirul Alam Dobhas and representatives of different service providing agencies were present at the meeting.
