Politics Matters

Dr. Mohammad Rafiqul Islam Talukdar

The identity of a politician cannot be corrupt or deceitful. Politicians are theoretically and naturally talented, visionary, and changeagents. The strategic apex stands on top of an organisation. Likewise, politicians are the strategic apex of the state. They are policy and budget makers as well as approvers, and strategists, and legislators.

Our children education, medical care, job opportunities, civic future, rule-of-law in a state and society, civic dignity and security, policy and application of political economy, distribution of public goods and government services, and economic prosperity of community, society, and the state - everything is determined by politics.

Politics and leadership are very influential. In addition to ensuring the economic prosperity of a sovereign state, unshackling marginalised people from hunger, poverty, sickness, illiteracy, oppression, and deprivation is very important. The quality of life, the welfare of the people, and the sustainable development of a country matter much. The same is true in the case of a community or constituency of a state.

The existing reality is that the corrupt people have occupied a broad place in politics, and they survived by building a vicious circle and wall. We must break down this wall. Therefore, the new generation must get enlightened with robust education and a responsible civic mentality. Society and community must come out of apoliticism or political unconsciousness.

I find the meaning of politics in Plato's Republic, Aristotle's Politics, Chanakya's Economics and Principles,  Confucius's Philosophy and Ethics, David Easton's Political System, Vladimir Lenin's Collected Works, Bernard Creek's In Defense of Politics, Adrian Leftwich's What Is Politics, and Andreas Osiander’s Sovereignty, International Relations, and the Westphalian Myth. Still, I acknowledge the significance of the political theory of ultra-realists like Niccolo Machiavelli, Thomas Hobbes, Henry Kissinger, and Harold Lasswell.

The development of politics and political culture could not be attained only through criticism of politics, conducting research on politics,  writing opinion pieces and articles, and imposing reforms from the top. For augmentation of the political culture, talented, promising, and ideological youth should come into the politics. A supportive climate needs to be created for ideologically talented youth to survive in politics and enter into parliamentary politics. Political reform has to be gone through politics.

Besides, 2020-21 is the Mujib-Year or Mujib-Bhorsho.  The initial plan was to celebrate the Mujib-Year gorgeously. But due to the Coronavirus pandemic situation, the Mujib-Bhorsho festival appears to be very simple. Counting of Mujib-Year and celebration of Mujib-Year has started from Bangabandhu's Homecoming Day on 10th  January 2020. It will run until 16th December 2021. May the Mujib-Year be successful.

Let the new generation promise through the celebration of Mujib-Year - to learn from Bangabandhu's speech on 7th March, from his life, and his political and development philosophy. Let them be more committed to build a happy and prosperous country and to realise Bangabandhu's dream of a golden Bengal by devoting themselves toward building a society free from drugs, corruption, terrorism, and exploitation.

Through the celebration of Mujib-Year, the golden Bengal of Bangabandhu's dream - where the true liberation of the people will take place, maybe paved. Therefore, Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina, a daughter of Bangabandhu, must continue the search for golden boys: Who are not only wearing Mujib coats but also nurturing the true Mujib ideology; Who will do politics for the new generation; Who will be able to work dedicatedly, efficiently and effectively to implement the goal of Bangabandhu’s daughter Sheikh Hasina to make Bangladesh a middle-income country by 2021 and a developed country before 2041.
