The Detective Branch (DB) of police arrested five alleged members of a mugging gang from the capital’s Tejgaon Industrial Area on Wednesday evening.
They arrestees are Manik Mia, Jakir Hossain, Mohammad Arif, Hazrat Ali and Jahid Hossain.
AKM Hafiz Akhter, additional commissioner (DB) of the DMP, said this while briefing reporters at the DMP media centre on Thursday.
The plain cloth police also seized a private car, a mobile phone set, a knife, a gamsa (towel) and some other things from their possession.
The officer said that the members of the gang used to pick up passengers to their car and dropped them on the roadside after robbing their cash and valuables.
The five ‘criminals’ were held regarding a case filed by one victim Ariful Islam with Khilkhet Police Station in May.
Quoting the case, the DB officer said that victim Arif was waiting at BRTC’s bus counter at Kuratali in Khilkhet at around 9:30pm on May 20. Suddenly, a private car with two passengers stopped in front of him asked where he wanted to go.
Arif told the car driver that he wanted to go at Gawsia in Narayanganj and the driver agreed to carry him there. Later, Arif got on the car.
At one stage, the driver and passengers, who are the members of the gang, started torturing him and looted cash and valuables and dropped him at Kaliganj in Gazipur. Police said that the criminals had been involved in the crime for long.
