EC sets date for by-polls to four constituencies

The Election Commission (EC) on Wednesday fixed dates for by-polls to four constituencies -- Lakshmipur-2, Sylhet-3, Dhaka-14 and Cumilla-5.

It also set dates for holding elections to 371 Union Parishads (UPs) and 11 municipalities. The dates for the elections were fixed during a meeting of the commission with Chief Election Commissioner (CEC) KM Nurul Huda in the chair.

As per the decisions in the meeting, by-polls to Lakshmipur-2 constituency, elections to 371 UPs and 11 municipalities will be held on June 21 while by-elections to three other constituencies will be held on July 14.

After the meeting, EC Secretary Mohammad Humayun Kabir Khandaker announced the election schedule at a press conference at the media centre of the EC office in the capital’s Agargaon.  

Sylhet-3 parliamentary seat fell vacant following the death of ruling Awami League (AL) MP Mahmud Us Samad Chowdhury while Dhaka-14 and Cumilla-5 have remained vacant due to the death of AL lawmakers Aslamul Haque and Abdul Matin Khasru respectively.
