42 fishermen, traders held for flouting fishing ban

Bangladesh Coast Guard (BCG) in separate drives detained 42 fishermen and fish traders from Barguna and Munshiganj on Sunday for netting fish ignoring ban and trying to smuggle shrimp fry.

A team of the BCG conducted a raid in the Bishkhali River in Patharghata upazila of Barguna and held 34 fishermen with 800 kilograms of sea fish.

Three wooden trawlers were also seized from them.

Later, a mobile court led by the upazila senior fisheries officer fined the fishermen and sold the fish through an auction.

Meanwhile, another team of the BCG conducted held five traders -- Riaz, 40, Jahid, 55, Murad Uddin, 45, Jahir, 45, and Abid, 40, from Mawa ghat in Munshiganj and seized 14 lakh shrimp  fries and two mini trucks from them.

They were going to smuggle the fries, said the press release.

The traders were handed over to fisheries officer concerned and the fries were released in the Padma River.

Mentionable, the government has imposed a 65-day ban on fishing at sea from May 20 to July 23.
