At least five people were killed and eight others injured in two separate road accidents in Chattogram and Narayanganj on Saturday.
In Chattogram, three persons were killed and five others injured as a rice-laden truck bound for Chattogram overturned at Sitakunda upazila in the morning.The deceased were identified as Atiqur Rahman, 27, Abdul Khalek, 50, Shariful, 46, while the injured were Mohsin, 23, Sajib, 30, Alam, 30, Nobin, 40, and Babul, 35.
Sources said the accident took place on the Dhaka-Chattogram highway at Shitalpur under the upazila around 8:00am.
The accident left Shariful killed on the spot and seven others injured critically.
The injured were rushed to Chattogram Medical College Hospital (CMCH) where Atiqur and Khalek succumbed to their injuries, said ASI Shilabrata Barua of the hospital police outpost.
The injured were undergoing treatment in the hospital, he said.
In Narayanganj, two people were killed and three others injured in a head-on collision between a truck and an ambulance at Sonargaon upazila of the district in the morning.The deceased was identified as Mohammad Humayun, 40, and Faruk Hossain, 35.
Assistant Sub-Inspector (ASI) of Kanchpur Highway Police Arif Khan said the accident occured in front of Ananta Garments on the Dhaka-Chittagong highway in Nayabari area of upazila.
The ambulance collided head-on with the truck coming from the opposite direction before Ananta Garments in the Cute Polli area of Kanchpur, killing Humayun on the spot and injuring Faruk severely.
Faruk later died on the way to the hospital.
Police seized the truck thought to be responsible for the accident but its driver managed to flee.
