Road Transport and Bridges Minister Obaidul Quader on Sunday urged all to remain alert as a highly contagious Indian variant of Covid-19 has been detected in Bangladesh.

“Indian variant of coronavirus has been detected in the country. A slight unawareness can invite a dangerous future,” he said.

Quader, also the Awami League general secretary, said this while virtually addressing a discussion organised by Bangabandhu Diploma Engineer Parishad on ‘Mujib Borhso and measures to deal the Covid-19’ at the auditorium of Institute of Diploma Engineers, Bangladesh.

The AL spokesperson said neighbouring India has been suffering from a severe Oxygen crisis despite being a top Oxygen produced country.

“India witnessed the highest death toll on Saturday. Their footpaths have become a graveyard. There is a hint of a third wave again in India, and Bangladesh is getting a dangerous message from India,” he said.

Mentioning that the people of the country have successfully dealt with many natural and man-made disasters under the leadership of Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina, Quader said Bangladesh will be able to deal successfully with the ongoing coronavirus pandemic.

“Now everyone has to be alert. Mass awareness needs to be built at home to fight against the pandemic,” he said.

The minister urged all to go by the call of Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina to celebrate the upcoming Eid-ul Fitr by staying in their current locations.

Criticising Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP), Quader urged BNP to stop the political blame game.

“Bangladesh is apparently in a good position in tackling Covid-19 crisis due to the courageous, visionary and humanitarian leadership of Sheikh Hasina,” he said.

“Sheikh Hasina has been able to bring the situation under control to a great extent by taking life and livelihoods into cognizance,” he said.
