Transparency International Bangladesh (TIB) sees a lack of political will in shifting the chemical warehouses from old Dhaka that caused the recent fire incident at Armanitola.
Apart from lack of political will, lack of coordination, accountability and justice are the main reasons behind frequent fire incidents in the old part of Dhaka, TIB said.In a statement on Sunday, the Berlin-based anti-graft watchdog repented that people are yet to be aware of the risk of chemical godowns in residential areas even after fire tragedies like Nimtali and Churihatta.
After Nimtali and Churihatta tragedies, a vested quarter has illegally kept running business, factories and warehouses of chemicals and flammable goods in residential areas of old Dhaka in collusion with a section of corrupt people, TIB said.
Not implementing most of the recommendations of the probe body and task force formed on Nimtali tragedy even 11 years after the tragedy; and not bringing the responsible people to justice led to Armanitola incident, TIB alleged.
“Many probe bodies are formed when an accident occurs. The same thing happened in the case of Armanitola fire incident, but how much will it be fruitful?” TIB boss Dr Iftekharuzzaman questioned.
