Dozens of bigwigs infected with coronavirus

Dozens of bigwigs, including cabinet members, advisers and lawmakers have reportedly been tested positive during the second wave of coronavirus pandemic.

Some of them have been hospitalised due to deteriorating physical conditions while the rest of them are staying at home.

At least 30 lawmakers, including a state minister and two whips of parliament, have been infected with the deadly virus as they have been standing by the people amid the national crisis.

Of the bigwigs of the ruling Awami League, two presidiums and two secretaries have also been infected with the highly contagious virus, sources in the AL and parliament say.

Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina’s energy advisor Dr Tawfiq-e-Elahi Chowdhury, daughter of country’s first prime minister Tajuddin Ahmed and former central committee member Simeen Hussain Rimi, AL cultural affairs secretary Ashim Kumar Ukil, his wife Apu Ukil, also general secretary of Jubo Mahila League, AL women and children secretary Meher Afroze Chumki have been tested positive recently.

According to parliament sources, lawmakers including AL Presidium member and former housing minister Mosharraf Hossain, another presidium member and president of Supreme Court Bar Association Abdul Matin Khasru and ruling party whip Shamsul Hoque Chowdhury have also been infected with Covid-19 recently.

Cox’s Bazar lawmakers Zafar Alam, Asheq Ullah Rafiq and Shahin Akter, wife of former AL lawmaker Abdur Rahman Bodi, have been tested positive for Covid-19.

Besides, Razee Mohammad Fakhrul, Tanvir Shakil Joy, Nizam Hazari, Mamunur Rashid Kiron, Gazi Mohammad Shahnawaz, Abdul Majid Khan, Omor Faruk Chowdhury, Pankaj Debnath and  Benzir Ahmed have also been infected with the coronavirus.

Lawmakers in women reserve seats, Naheed Ezaher Khan, Khodeza Nasreen Akhter Hossain, Sherin Ahmed, Jinnatul Bakia and Aroma Dutta have also tested positive.

Lawmakers are infected with coronavirus include Tanvir Imam, Ahmed Firoz Kabir, Tanvir Hasan Choto Monir, former state minister Kazi Keramot Ali, Hazi Mohammad Selim.

Earlier, during the first wave of coronavirus, at least 150 lawmakers were infected with the virus. Former whip and AL lawmaker Shahiduzzaman Sarker was first infected among the lawmakers with the deadly virus.

Among the cabinet members, Chattogram Hill Tracts Affairs Minister Bir Bahadur Ushwe Sing was infected.

AL health affairs secretary Dr Rokeya Sultana told Daily Sun that many ruling party men including central leaders have been infected with the virus as they have been standing by the people amid the national crisis.

“Even, ministers and lawmakers have been infected. Some of them are taking treatment at hospitals and some are in home isolation,” she said.

Four lawmakers, including former health minister and party presidium Mohammed Nasim, former minister and AL presidium member Sahara Khatun, Israfil Alam and Mahmud Us Samad Chowdhury Kayes died of Covid-19.

Besides, incumbent state minister for religious affairs Sheikh Mohammad Abdullah, former mayor of Sylhet City Corporation and AL central committee member Badar Uddin Ahmed Kamran and member of AL advisory council Makbul Hossain died of Covid-19.

Some 522 AL men died of coronavirus during the first wave of coronavirus infection and the list was handed over to party President and Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina in its last central working committee meeting, party deputy office secretary Sayem Khan said, adding that no new list has been prepared later.
