EC postpones UP, municipal polls of Apr 11

The first phase Union Parishad (UP) and municipal polls have been postponed following the rise in Covid-19 cases across the country.

The Election Commission (EC) has decided in principle to postpone the election after an emergency meeting on Monday afternoon.

SM Asaduzzaman, Director (Public Relation) & Joint Secretary of EC, said the decision was taken after an emergency meeting following the 18-point directive to contain the sharp rise of COVID-19 cases in the country by the government.

The emergency meeting was held in the presence of Chief Election Commissioner

KM Nurul Huda, election commissioners Md Rafiqul Islam, Begum Kabita Khanam, Brigadier General (retd) Shahadat Hossain Chowdhury, EC Secretary Md Humayun Kabir Khandaker, Additional Secretary Ashok Kumar Debnath and other high officials, sources said.

Elections to 371 UPs and 11 municipalities were scheduled to be held on April 11.

New date for the elections to the UPs and municipalities will be announced later depending on the coronavirus situation across the country.

Decision on by-election to Lakshmipur-2 constituency -- scheduled for 11 April -- will be announced after a meeting on April 1.
