14 fishermen jailed in Chandpur

CHANDPUR: A total number of fourteen fishermen were jailed and fined in a drive for catching jatka fish and seized 500 kgs of jatka fish and one lakh meters of current nets from the Meghna river under Haimchar upazila of the district on Wednesday night.

The mobile courts led by Assistant Commissioner of Land and Executive Magistrate Reagan Chakma, Upazila Administration, Fisheries Department and Nilkamal Naval Police conducted a drive from 7pm to 2am on Wednesday night in different areas on the Meghna River in Haimchar Upazila of the district .

The join team arrested 14 fishermen and seized one lakh meters of current nets and seized 500-kg of jatka fish from their possession during the drive, said upazila fisheries officer Mizanur Rahman.

Assistant Commissioner of Land and Executive Magistrate Reagan Chakma sentenced five fishermen to one year in prison, while the remaining nine fishermen were released on a fine of Taka 5,000 each total of Taka 45,000.

The seized nets were destroyed this morning by fire on the banks of the river and the jatka fish were distributed among local orphanages and helpless family members, sources said.
